Carrie Falbe Ph.D. Fellowship

Overview

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for the new Carrie Falbe Ph.D. Fellowship, established in honor of Carrie Falbe, an ASU alumnus. In her spirit, this award recognizes PhD Students who demonstrate excellent academic performance, positive personal character and integrity. The award recipient will be a creative, collaborative student whose PhD program and intended career path is dedicated to creating societal good by addressing real-world problems through inquiry and research. The fellowship will be awarded to students that have a great desire to make everything around them better, just as Carrie did. 

We anticipate one award of approximately $2,400.

Applications are due no later than March 13, 2024, for Fall 2024 disbursement. Students graduating in Spring 2024 or Summer 2024 are not eligible.

Eligibility

The recipient must be enrolled during the Spring and Fall 2024 semesters in one of the following doctoral programs administrated by The College:

  • Applied mathematics
  • Biochemistry
  • Biology
  • Biology (biology and society)
  • Biology (complex adaptive systems science)
  • Chemistry
  • Exploration systems design (instrumentation)
  • Exploration systems design (sensor networks)
  • Exploration systems design (systems engineering)
  • Mathematics
  • Microbiology
  • Molecular/cellular biology
  • Neuroscience
  • Physics
  • Statistics

The student must be in good academic standing with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and have meaningful accomplishments outside of the scholastic setting. 

Application process

All applicants who meet the eligibility requirement and submit a complete set of materials and by the deadline will be considered. The College award committee will review applications by federal, state and university laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

In addition to the application form (located at the bottom of this page), to be considered completed applications must include: 

  • Student CV .
  • Personal statement no longer than 500 words speaking to your accomplishments, why you are the ideal candidate for this award and your aspirations after completion of your ASU PhD program.  
  • Video submission no longer than 5 minutes in length that talks about yourself. Please address the following:

    • Tell us your personal story, background, and how they shaped your academic interests & pursuits.

    • In what ways do you give back to or impact those around you, and hope to give back in the future?

    • In what ways have you demonstrated initiative?

    • Why you are pursuing your current degree, and what do you plan to do after graduation?

  • A letter of recommendation speaking to the applicant’s character, maturity, and interpersonal skills. This is submitted by the letter writer here via the link at the bottom of the page or here.

TIP: The purpose of the written documents is to get to know your research and accomplishments. The purpose of the video is to get to know you and your personal story. Videos are evaluated by content rather than editing and special effects.

Please be aware that the award may affect your financial aid package; contact Financial Aid and Scholarship Services for information specific to your account.
