Advising Forms

All course override requests must be approved by the department who offers the course. Prior to submission, verify which college offers the course in ASU Class Search by clicking on the course title and ‘Full Class Details’. Only courses offered by ‘The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ may be submitted through the form below. After submission, please allow 2 business days for processing.

Types of Override Requests

  • Prerequisite Override
    • When you have not completed the required prerequisite course or the prerequisite course has not yet posted to your ASU record.
    • Required for consideration: Permission from the instructor or evidence that the prerequisite course is complete or in-progress.
  • Class Full
    • When there are no additional seats remaining in a course.
    • Required for consideration: Permission from the instructor and the department required.
  • Instructor Permission
    • When an instructor must approve prior to registration.
    • Required for consideration: Permission from the instructor.
  • Departmental Consent
    • When a department must approve prior to registration.
    • No supporting documentation necessary.
  • Time Conflict
    • When two or more courses overlap.
    • Required for consideration: Permission from all instructors of overlapping courses.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Course Override Form

Typically, students are only able to take up to 18 credit hours per semester or 7 credits in each summer session. Students may petition to register for more credits in a given semester by submitting a Credit Overload Petition.

When requesting a credit overload, first talk to your academic advisor to confirm that the overload is necessary based on a thorough evaluation of your DARS. Your advisor might be able to find a way to meet your requirements more efficiently.

If you move forward with submitting a request, you need to have a legitimate academic reason for making the request and be able to describe in detail how you will meet the demands of a heightened workload.

To be considered for an overload, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete a full term at ASU before the overload term
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Not be repeating a course during the overload term
  • Be a degree-seeking student
  • Submit the form at least a week prior to the start of the session

The college typically expects students to also meet the following cumulative GPA requirements. However, your recent academic performance as well as other commitments will be considered in evaluating your request.

GPA requirements

Fall or Spring C: 19 hours = 2.5 or higher; 20-21 hours = 3.0 or higher; 22 or more hours= 3.4 or higher
Fall or Spring A/B: 10 hours = 3.0 or higher; 11 or more hours= 3.4 or higher
Summer A/B: 8-9 hours = 3.0 or higher; 10 or more hours = 3.4 or higher

Session C (15 wk) 18 credits
Session A/B (7.5 wk) 9 credits
Combined (total) 18 credits

Summer session limits

Session C (8 wk) 9 credits
Session A/B (6 wk) 7 credits
Combined (total) 14 credits

Where/when do I submit my Credit Overload Petition?

The amount of credits you are requesting determines how soon you need to submit your form in order to receive a decision prior to the start of the session. Submit requests to your academic advisor. 

Fall or Spring C: 24 or fewer credits One week prior to start of session.
Fall or Spring A/B: 12 or fewer credits One week prior to start of session.
Summer A/B: 8-10 credits One week prior to start of session.
Fall or Spring C: Over 24 credits Two weeks prior to start of session.
Fall or Spring A/B: Over 12 credits Two weeks prior to start of session.
Summer A/B: Over 10 credits Two weeks prior to start of session.

Petition Guidelines:

  • Petitions are for The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences majors only.
  • The petitioning process can take 4-8 weeks from date of submission during fall or spring semesters. Summer petitions may take longer.
  • Incomplete petitions will be returned without review.
  • The ASU General Catalog is the governing document for all policies and rules.

  • Complete the petition form below based on your request and submit all required materials with your completed petition to your assigned academic advisor in your major.
  • Substitution of the college Second Language or Mathematics Proficiency (Petition must include appropriate documentation/support from the ASU Disability Resources Center. Petitions without this documentation will not be reviewed)
  • The form available at: Undergraduate Standards Committee Petition is used for students who want to:
    • Return to a previous catalog year
    • Substitution of University General Studies (Transfer Courses Only)
    • Substitution of University General Studies (ASU Courses Only) and General Study Criteria Check sheets
    • Substitution of the college Second Language or Mathematics Proficiency (Petition must include appropriate documentation/support from the ASU Disability Resources Center. Petitions without this documentation will not be reviewed)
    • Substitution of the college Graduation Requirements
  • The form available at: Petition to Repeat Coursework a Third or Fourth Time is used for students who want to:
    • Repeat a course for a third time. 
    • Repeat a course for a fourth time.  A fourth time repeat will need to include supporting documentation from the student’s home department leadership. 

Pursuing a concurrent degree in The College requires approval. In order to complete a second baccalaureate degree or concurrent degree, students must earn at least 30 unique credit hours applied toward the requirements for each major's degree. Specific combinations of degrees may be deemed inappropriate. Students should visit The College's concurrent degree checklist for more information on pursuing a concurrent degree.

To be considered for a concurrent degree in The College:

  • Student must be in good academic standing (ASU cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher).
  • Have completed a minimum 30 credit hours (total credits, not just ASU).
  • Have completed a full fall or spring semester at ASU.
  • A concurrent degree may not be in a closely related discipline; check with your academic advisor for specific questions.
  • You must follow approval criteria procedures for both colleges if one degree is outside of The College.
  • You must earn at least 30 unique credit hours from each degree's major requirements.

If you wish to remove a concurrent degree, please email your primary academic advisor with your full name and ASU ID #, stating clearly which degree(s) you wish to remove from your academic record. If you are pursuing any minors or certificates, please indicate if you wish to retain the minor(s) or certificate(s) so we can ensure it remains on your active degree program.
