Overview
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for the Dr. Manuel Barrera Jr. Memorial Scholarship, established in honor of Dr. Manuel Barrera, an ASU faculty member who was recognized for his contributions as well his love of mentorship during his tenure in the Psychology Department. The spirit of the award is intended to open doors, create opportunities, and celebrate the abilities in everyone.
Applications are due no later than March 3, 2025, for Fall 2025 disbursement. Students graduating in Spring 2025 or Summer 2025 are not eligible.
Eligibility
The recipient must be a student enrolled in a doctoral or master’s program administered by the Natural Sciences in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The student must be in good academic standing with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and an Arizona Resident.
The student must additionally meet one or more of the following requirements:
- Is a first-generation college student
- Is registered with Student Accessibility and Inclusive Learning Services (SAILS)
- Demonstrates an interest in service to the community or campus, and plans to continue giving back to the community after graduation
Students graduating in Spring 2025 or Summer 2025 are not eligible.
Application Process
All applicants who submit a complete set of materials by the deadline will be considered. The College award committee will review applications by federal, state and university laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
Applicants should complete the application form and include the required materials listed below.
Required:
- Faculty letter of recommendation.
- General application form submission.
- CV.
- An essay of a maximum of 500 words that describes how the student and their activities or research meet the objectives of the award.
Funds are distributed through ASU student accounts. Please be aware that the award may affect your financial aid package; contact Financial Aid and Scholarship Services for information specific to your account. The award will apply to any outstanding balance you may owe to ASU first and any remaining funds will be provided to you via direct deposit or check.
